About Second Baptist Church

Second Baptist Church was founded in 1957 by Dr. Earl Miller Jr., the first group of five believers met in a trailer at the B&E Trailer Court in Ravenswood.  In the fall of 1957, members of the Second Baptist Church purchased a two-storied building with basement on the property of Ann and Elwood Streets.  The congregation met in this building until 1962, when a new auditorium was erected.  Climbing attendance necessitated the addition of a new wing into the main auditorium.  With the addition of the new wing, the church accepted a recommendation to demolish the old building where Worship Services were held early in the history of the church.

In the effort to teach and train individuals to live for Christ, the church started Heritage Christian Academy in 1975 and had its opening day on September 2nd in the church building with an enrollment of 63 students.  A new building was built for the school the following year.

Through these and other outreaches of Second Baptist Church, climbing attendance necessitated the addition of two new church wings and purchases of additional acreage for parking facilities.  On September 23, 1979, the church hosted a “Dedication day,” as a way of praising the Lord for the completion of new and present sanctuary and church building.

The church has had seven pastors prior to our current pastor, Dr. S. Richard Parsons Jr., Pastor Parsons came to Second Baptist Church in June of 2003.  Under the leadership of Pastor Parsons the church has been revived with souls being saved nearly every week, many of which have been baptized and joined the church over the past five years.  Through God given vision, God has used Pastor Parsons in a powerful way, in September of 2005, Second Baptist Church started the Reformers Unanimous Faith Based Addictions Program, and in May of 2007, the King James Bible Institute, as the Bible says; “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
